iPhone - I will love you tomorrow

July 13th, 2008 ·

iphone

Yes, I was one of the millions of people that stood in line on Friday morning.  I got there at 5:15am-ish and waited patiently until 8am.  I was about number 30, so, I was in and out by 8:40am-ish.  Well, as you probably guessed (as many of us did), I played with my new toy all weekend.

Well I have to say, my first iPhone experience was not necessarily a pleasant one.

Let me try and explain.

First, I will be doing a short series on my experience with this new toy and hopefully some videos on how do some of the things I found.

Second, let me start by saying, that this new toy is AWESOME!!  The only thing I don’t like is the keyboard, other than that… it ROCKS!!

Third, even though the Microsoft Exchange piece is easy to setup and works really well.  I highly recommend to anyone who going to use it… do not initialize the process until you have installed all of the applications you want on to your iPhone, first.

I say this from my recent experience…  I am not saying this is the case for everyone, but this happened to me.

On Friday, I immediately initialized my Exchange on my iPhone and my email started flowing right away… YAY

After that, I hooked it up to my MacBook Pro (after I installed iTunes 7.7).  I stated by adding some applications right away.  Well, that caused all types of problems.  I installed Remote, Twitter, AIM, Google Apps, PhoneSaber, Light, Loopt, Flickr, Pandora and about two or three other apps. Well, it started rebooting about every 30 to 60 seconds.  So, I uninstalled all of the apps and started over… well, this took me all day Friday and part of morning on Saturday.  Then I finally gave up (after two full resets and data wipes).  I took it back to the Apple store.  They were very nice and exchanged it.

So, I took it home and started missing around with it again… well, guess what???  It started happening again.  I knew that it wasn’t the hardware (mostly)… I knew it had to be the software and/or configuration.  So, I started slowly (again - both on my Mac and PC), and initialized Exchange and installed one application.  Well, within 20 minutes, it started rebooting again.  So, I reset again.  Installed one application and then did the Exchange setup and it ran just fine for a couple hours.  So, I tempted fate and added couple more apps.  Well, it took about 10 minutes and it did it again… reboot city.  Mind you, these apps are nothing special, just the ones I mentioned above.  So, I thought just maybe I would add all the apps I wanted then initialize Exchange.  Well, that has been working for about 6 hours now and no reboots.

Crazy story, but it is mine :)

Well, I hope to have more stuff later on this week.

Enjoy your iPhone, if you have one… I know I will “tomorrow” :)

The Calacanis Model - Entrepreneurial Insanity

June 1st, 2008 ·

I found out about Jason Calacanis about 6 to 7 months ago from Leo Laporte’s TWiT.  I had never heard of this guy named Jason or even wanted to get know him.  I didn’t even consider myself an Entrepreneur (and I still kinda don’t).  But… there is/was something about Jason Calacanis that struck me ……. I can’t seem to find the word…. funny, odd, familiar, etc…

Anyway, Jason started up this company Mahalo - The Human Powered Search Engine (a wikipedia style website).  At first I thought it was incomplete and why would anyone come here.  I checked it out for a while and contributed a couple links and then moved on…. like most people did at first (until they get to know Jason and understand what Mahalo is all about).

So, time marched on and Jason was on TWiT again.  This time, he mentioned that he may give a new laptop to anyone that could contribute to Mahalo the most (i.e. most friends, most links recommended, most content written, etc…)   Well, I said… I can do that… and I did (RE: most recommended links).

Well, he changed the rules and I didn’t get the laptop.  I was not happy that I didn’t get it; however, I finally realized what Jason was doing and if know him, you would understand why (watch the videos below).  Even though the laptop (or the lack there of) got me in the door at Mahalo (virtually), it is no longer my goal in dealing with Jason and Mahalo.  It has grown in to a whole new way of thinking and possibly a whole new future for me and my family.

Jason’s interpretation of business (as shown below), isn’t revolutionary, it’s just smart.  Our society/world have been brought up to just go with the flow and you will do well in life.  Well, I don’t want to think that way any more… thanks Jason!

I want more from life… Obviously, I want a happy and healthy life for me and my family, first and foremost (and I already have it).
I want satisfaction in my work life and I want to create something that I am proud enough to tell the whole world!
I will obtain it!

WOW!! - Mahalo VLOG Idol - What an interesting ride!!

May 29th, 2008 ·

So, it looks like I didn’t win the laptop (again)! On well…

Leah and Andrea have to make a viral video within 5 days of today… let’s hope they do a good job.  I can’t wait to see what they will do :)

Here is Episode 2:

Even though Sarah Atwood and Lisa Brewster didn’t win, I am still very happy for Leah D’Emilio and Andrea Rene.  Best of luck to both of you…  Since I wasn’t voting for either one… I will have to see who does the best viral video.  Let the race begin!!!  Who ever does the best job get’s my vote!  Even though my vote probably doesn’t count… I will still comment and blog about it :)

I have much more to say about this topic and probably more than I need to :)  So, I will be doing a podcast this evening with pcnerd37 of http://unofficialmahalopodcast.com/ and http://globalgeeknews.com/ on http://www.talkshoe.com.  Stay tuned.  The actual podcast will be out Friday or Saturday.

BTW… Kristina Allison is AWESOME!!! Best of luck to you!!

And now a word from our sponsor…

May 27th, 2008 ·

I’d like to take short intermission from your Mahalo VLOG Idol… which should be ending real soon, so stay tuned!!!

Two things would like to talk (in short)…

1) Twitter, yes our beloved Twitter.  This weekend Michael Arrington did a post on TechCrunch called Twitter!  I will have to say…  I had a ton of fun with this blog post.  Reason: Loic Le Meur the creator Seesmic.  The only way to describe the post is… well, go check it out and see… it was fun, stupid, interesting and most of all a glimpse in to our future of communicating. Check it out: Twitter!

2) A good friend of mine is doing a series on Personal Branding.  It is a interesting topic and I believe it will be an excellent read… Check out!

On a personal note… I would like to thank all of the people that have visited my site over the past month (during the Mahalo VLOG Idol).  I truly appreciate you taking the time to stop on by!

You’ll come back ya hear! :)

Thanks!

Mahalo VLOG Idol Finalist - My Picks

May 22nd, 2008 ·

UPDATE: http://tinyurl.com/6q9×4b

You can vote now on Mahalo Daily!!

——————————————

I have to tell you that I my decision was very difficult to make!

All of the ladies did an excellent job and I don’t envy Jason Calacanis and Mahalo Team.

Here are the 6, in order of my most to least favorite.

1. Sarah Atwood

I think Sarah did a great job here with Hula Dancing.  It was very informative and she showed a true interest in the art of the dance.  I read a few of the comments on Mahalo Daily, they mentioned that she didn’t show enough dancing.  Well, I think it is important to remember that Sarah was matching the interviewees pace and style.  Also, Hula Dancing is mostly hand movements.

2. Kristina Allison

If I had a choice (and I don’t), I think Mahalo Daily should have 6 lady hosts; however, we aren’t making the final decisions.  Anyway, Kristina is a bang up job with this interview.  She got the interviewee to talk and talk and she listened and listened :)  It wasn’t her best interview, but she did very well!

3. Michelle Hummel

I have to say that this was my most fun show to watch, hands down!  Michelle did an excellent job showing the audience what it is like to ride a go-kart.  I want to go now :)  I think she could have had more interaction with the people and maybe interviewed some other customers.  All and all a great show.

4. Andrea Rene

Andrea is absolutely great in front of the camera… Brilliant, I tell ya, BRILLIANT!  She did the interview well and showed us how to shot a few guns.  The only thing I didn’t like about the show, was the guns.  I am not a fan of guns so, the topic completely turned me off to the whole show.

5. Leah D’Emilio

Leah has excellent (in front of the camera) skills and I think she will go very far in her career.  However, I don’t think she is a good fit for Mahalo.  I believe Loren Feldman said that she was a little to professional, and I think I would have to agree with him.  All and all I great show, just not the best.

6. Nadine Heimann

I really hate having to pick a number to represent a persons talent… so with that being said, I can’t really give Nadine a 6th place in my ranking of the next Mahalo VLOG Idol contest… she is #1 in my book.  Actually all of them are; however, Jason asked us to do this and I am doing my best to follow :)  Anyway, Nadine is great in front of the camera and I think she would be awesome at Mahalo!

So, I leave you with this final thought… this isn’t a contest to see who is the best, brightest or most talented… it was an introduction to great bunch of ladies that have enriched our lives with there brains and beauty!

I have created a form/poll to capture my own stats:

This poll is not official and is not affiliated with Mahalo.com

Here is the form:
